Dr. Amit Dey / ডঃ অমিত দে
Dr. Amit Dey is a Professor of History, the Department of History, Centre For Advanced Studies, University of Calcutta, India. He received a Ph.D. in History in September 1999 from the University of London for his work on The Image of the Prophet in Bengali Muslim Piety; 1850-1947 and completed his doctoral research as a Commonwealth Scholar being affiliated to the Department of History, Royal Holloway, University of London. His area of specialization is Islam and Islamic Mysticism in Medieval and Modern South Asia.
Prof. Dey’s published works include: Sufism in India (1996), The Image of the Prophet in Bengali Muslim Piety; 1850-1947 (2006) and one co-edited book, Between Tradition and Modernity; Aspects of Islam in South Asia (2011).
Prof. Dey is the co-editor of the Bengali Academic journal; Itikotha. He has published over 38 articles on Islam and Islamic mysticism in academic journals. He delivered lectures in famous institutions such as the University of Chicago, North Carolina State University, Louisiana State University, University of California, Santa Barbara, University of Heidelberg, University of Roma, University of Uppsala, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Erfurt, Chungnam National University, Aligarh Muslim University, Jamia Millia Islamia, University of London, The Asiatit Society Kolkata, Nalanda (International) University Rajgir, University of Kashmir Srinagar (Centre for Central Asian Studies), Gauhati University, Victoria Memorial Kolkata, ICCR Kolkata, Centre For Studies in Social Sciences Kolkata (Chaired a session), MAKAIAS (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies) Kolkata, etc. Nearly fifteen scholars have successfully completed their Ph.D. or M.Phil. researches under his supervision. At present, a dozen scholars are carrying out their Ph.D. or M.Phil. research under his supervision. Apart from examining Ph.D. thesis submitted in Indian and foreign Universities, Prof. Dey also acted as subject expert during the selection of Asst. Professors, Associate Professors and Professors in Indian and foreign Universities.
